Singletree Gun & Plough is located on the edge of the Hammer Stern Wilderness Preserve, a thousand acre Wildlife Preserve including over 5 miles of river frontage on the beautiful Dan River in Stokes County. Stokes County is the only county in the US that has its own mountain range. The Sauratown Mountains consist of 17 named mountain tops which begin and end within the borders of the county. There are also springs, streams, wetlands, rocky hill tops and unusual species including the rare table mountain pine, an endangered fresh water clam, and the elusive peregrine falcon. Stokes County is also one of two places in the world where Itacolumite, bendable rock, is found.
We consult frequently with Wildlife Biologists, our Agricultural Extension Agent, Soil and Water Conservation Specialists, Geologists and various state and county organizations to maintain and enhance the native, natural integrity of our property. We also employ QDMA (Quality Deer Management Association) Standards to ensure the health and well being of our many species of wildlife.
The identification of all the flora and fauna, endangered, rare, and otherwise is an ongoing process. We are also cataloging areas of rocky outcroppings, streams, waterfalls, ponds, meadows, and wetlands. Other than whitetail deer, turkey, wood duck, wood cock, and bobcat we have also recorded bear, mink, otter, timber rattlesnake and a reported (we swear!) mountain lion. We are proud of the Preserve and are taking every measure to protect this valuable and beautiful land.
