The Preserve
“The most important thing we do,
our top priority, our main mission,
our primary task;
Take Care of the Land.
…all else is secondary.”
That is the sign that hangs in the office of Singletree Gun & Plough. Our primary goal is to preserve this spot of gorgeous Wilderness it has been our great fortune and privilege to watch over. Having 1000 acres including over five miles of riverfront contributes to the uniqueness and adventure that is the Singletree experience. Even if one chooses to just rest in the cabins reading, knowing that one is surrounded by Forest brings a peace all its own.
For generations people have been traveling to these old soul mountains to find respite and rest. We have 12 miles of private trails through our property filled with bubbling streams, rocky outcrops, towering trees, little waterfalls, and always the sparkling sound of the Dan River. Whether one calls it hiking, forest bathing, nature meditation, or simply “a walk in the woods,” communing with Wilderness is a time honored tradition we celebrate here at Singletree.
“Among the many reasons to preserve what is left of our ancient forests, the mental aspects stand tall. The notion that forests have a special place in the realm of public health, including an ability to refresh the weary, is not a new one. ” ( Your Brain on Nature, Mother Earth News)
“Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity” — John Muir
“It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men’s hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air, that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.” —Robert Louis Stevenson
“We need the tonic of wildness…At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature.”― Henry David Thoreau
“The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.”
― John Muir
“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn.”
― John Muir
